The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute serves as one of the most extensive clinical programs in the state for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with complex neurological diseases and injuries. The staff includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, psychologists, neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists, researchers and allied health professionals who are dedicated to a program of care that meets the specific needs of each individual patient.
The Institute has consistently led the field of neuroscience by investing in the most sophisticated technology that gives our specialists an edge in diagnosing and treating disease. Some examples include being the first in the country to have the Adventex LCN Plus, an improved 3-D vascular imaging machine, and offering other technological innovations such as frameless neuronavigation, MRI spectroscopy, as well as functional, diffusion and perfusion, vagal nerve stimulator, endovascular imaging and neuroendoscopy. The Institute's latest advancement and the first in New Jersey is the Gamma Knife, a non-invasive (bloodless) stereotactic radiosurgery technology that can destroy a tumor deep within the brain without a single incision.
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute offers a wide array of complementary programs to treat the most complex neurological disorders. Coupled with the most advanced technology and a professional support system, the physicians at the Institute are able to provide leading edge medical treatment with compassionate care.
For example, the Institute works in collaboration with the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute to offer a unique program to diagnose and treat balance disorders. Featured in the Institute's laboratory is state-of-the-art equipment including computerized video ENG, computerized rotary chair, and computerized dynamic posturography. Treatments offered through the program include medical management by neurologists, surgery by neurosurgeons, and vestibular rehabilitation by a team of physical therapists.
The Institute also focuses on bringing hope and relief to people who suffer from epilepsy. Because epilepsy is so disabling, the Institute offers the specialized talents of a highly trained medical staff selected for their expertise in the most advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques for the disease. Offering both inpatient and outpatient treatment options, patients are evaluated for medical management, as well as surgical management to control, and at times, cure this disease.
The professional team at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute recognizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment for those who suffer from a movement disorder. While there are no known cures for movement disorders, Institute patients can feel confident that the treatment approach designed specifically for them can do much to restore and maintain functioning levels. Disorders treated include Parkinson's Disease, Chorea and Huntington's disease, Dystonia, Cerebral Palsy and more.
The Institute's highly trained and experienced team of specialists offer patients with primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spinal cord individualized attention and compassionate care from diagnosis through treatment and more. Diagnosis is accomplished through one of a combination of testing procedures, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which helps a specialist determine the location and extent of the tumor; MR spectroscopy, which determines the chemical composition of the growth; Functional MRI, which assesses the brain function; and stereotactic biopsy, which determines the tumor type. Based on the specific diagnosis, the Institute's team of specialists determines the best possible treatment. Treatment options may include neurosurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or interventional radiology. Participation in research protocols and national clinical trials is also available to those candidates who meet the study criteria.
Designed to provide the highest standard of care for all patients with sleep disorders, the Institute's Sleep Disorder Center focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of both adults and children. Working closely with surgical and medical specialists, including ENT and oro-maxillary surgeons, pulmonologists and psychiatrists, the Sleep Disorder Center team provides comprehensive treatment options for the patient with a diagnosed sleep disorder. The Center is also actively involved in research and community education focusing on the role of sleep disorders in human daily cognitive function, the long-term consequences of untreated sleep apnea and the long-term effect of poor quality of sleep in society and its increasing prevalence across all cultures.
The Institute's Stroke Treatment Program provides a continuum of services from acute stroke intervention treatment to rehabilitation services offered through the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. As the first medical center in New Jersey to have a protocol in place for treatment with tPA - an FDA-approved drug used for the treatment of stroke within three hours of the onset of symptoms - the Institute serves as the state leader in stroke treatment.
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute also features a Children's Neurological Center, offering each and every child a comprehensive continuum of care in a cheerful, child-focused environment. The Center's multidisciplinary team of trained pediatric subspecialists has the tools and technological resources necessary to quickly and accurately render a diagnosis. Under the direction of board-certified pediatric specialists, the Center's staff of nurses, technicians, psychologists, neuropsychologists, social workers and other professionals are dedicated to one thing - putting children on the road to recovery.
