Neurosurgeon Joins Staff
Edison , NJ -- Princeton resident Stephen M. Bloomfield, MD has joined the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI) at JFK Medical Center in Edison as a functional/epilepsy neurosurgeon and Associate Professor. In his position, Dr. Bloomfield's responsibilities will include: helping develop regional referral centers for the evaluation and treatment of patients with intractable epilepsy, movement disorders, brain tumors, and intractable pain. He will also help expand the Gamma Knife Center to a regional referral center for the treatment of patients with brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and trigeminal neuralgia, and assist in the development of a neurosurgical residency program and a neuroscience research center
Prior to joining the NJNI staff, Dr. Bloomfield served as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at West Virginia University Medical School in Morgantown , WV . Prior to that he was a Clinical Instructor of Neurosurgery at the University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange , CA .
In 1980, Dr. Bloomfield received his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School in Piscataway , NJ . He also holds a dual bachelor's degree in biological sciences and psychology from Rutgers College in New Brunswick , NJ and a Master's in Psychobiology from Rutgers University .
Dr. Bloomfield conducted a surgical internship at Rutgers Medical School in Piscataway , NJ and a residency in neurology at New Jersey Medical School in Newark , NJ . He also completed a residency in neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix , AZ. He was a fellow in neurochemical evaluation of seizure disorders for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland , in evaluation and neurosurgical treatment of intractable epilepsy at UCLA in Los Angeles , CA , and in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery and Neuro-Oncology at University of California Irvine in Irvine , CA .
Dr. Bloomfield is board certified in Neurological Surgery and has published extensively on the topics of functional neurosurgery and on the treatment of patients with brain tumors and brain disorders. He is a member in a number of professional societies, including: the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the Congress of Neurological Surgery, and the International Society of Radiosurgery.
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is a comprehensive facility designed exclusively for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of complex neurological disorders in children and adults. Services offered at the Institute include programs in tumors of the nervous system, dizziness and balance disorders, neurological vision disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, cerebral palsy, movement disorders, cerebrovascular disease and sleep disorders. As a department of Seton Hall University 's School of Graduate Medical Education , NJNI serves as the clinical setting for SHU's residency training in pediatric and adult neurology.
