NEW JERSEY NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE FIRST FACILITY IN NEW JERSEY TO OFFER HYDROCEPHALUS CLINIC
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center in Edison is the first facility in the state to offer a comprehensive clinic that specifically focuses on patients with hydrocephalus and related disorders. Related disorders of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) include syringomyelia, Chiari malformation, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and pseudotumor cerebri.
"The Hydrocephalus Clinic at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute is unique to the East Coast. It is the first facility to offer a continuum of care with a specialized medical staff and the latest technology for the treatment of hydrocephalus and related disorders," stated Gary Magram, M.D., director of the clinic. "We are a tertiary care facility, treating newborns to the elderly."
Hydrocephalus, more commonly known as "water on the brain," occurs when the delicate balance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is disrupted and there is a buildup of CSF inside the brain. It is a lifelong condition that requires monitoring. Generally, patients have a shunt, a flexible tube, placed into the ventricular system of the brain, which diverts the flow of CSF into another region of the body, most often the abdominal cavity.
Patients with complex hydrocephalus, shunt malfunctions, shunt-related headaches or shunt-related complications are evaluated and treated in the Hydrocephalus Clinic, where the latest innovations in shunt technology and neuroendoscopic third ventriculostomy procedures are available.
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is an affiliate of Solaris Health System, serving the greater Central New Jersey region. The system includes acute care hospitals, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers, nursing and convalescent facilities, an assisted living community and specialized treatment programs. More than 1,000 of the areas finest surgeons, physicians and dentists are affiliated with Solaris Health System.
