NEW JERSEY NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE AT JFK MEDICAL CENTER AT LEADING EDGE OF ADVANCED BRAIN SURGERY

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center in Edison was the first medical facility in the nation and one of the first in the world to offer the latest technology available to diagnose and treat diseases of the brain. This technology creates a three-dimensional (3-D) image of the brain’s blood vessels. The specialized neurovascular team is able to study brain pathology over 360 degrees enabling them to treat the disease without affecting the normal brain. The Institute has one of the nation’s most experienced neurosurgeon and neuroradiologist studying and utilizing this technology.

Cerebral aneurysms are abnormal blisters on arteries of the brain. Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are abnormal tangles of the brain’s blood vessels. Both conditions can break open or rupture, causing death or a devastating neurologic deficit. The neurovascular team at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute utilizes the 3-D images to more accurately diagnose the problem and determine the best treatment utilizing either microsurgical or endovascular techniques. Endovascular treatment entails the passing of microcatheters (tiny flexible tubes) through the blood vessels in the brain and treating deep brain aneurysms, AVMs, strokes and tumors without opening the skull or cutting through brain tissue.

Endovascular treatment is a great benefit to patients suffering from a stroke. With the advanced technology, a microcatheter is placed directly into the blocked blood vessel and medication is administered to dissolve the clot, restoring blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This technology is also used for the treatment of brain tumors. Blood vessels that feed the tumor can be selectively blocked allowing surgical tumor removal with minimal bleeding.

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is a comprehensive center designed exclusively for the diagnosis, treatment and research of complex neurologic disorders in adults and children. Services available through the Neuroscience Institute include programs in vascular disorders (aneurysms, strokes), dizziness and balance disorders, epilepsy, spine and brain tumors, cerebral palsy, movement disorders, sleep disorders, and neuromuscular disorders.
