New Jersey Neuroscience Institute
Celebrates Sleep Disorder Center Expansion
Edison, NJ - Recently the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI)
of JFK Medical Center celebrated the recent expansion of the Institutes
Sleep Disorder Center. NJNI Chairman Martin Gizzi opened the event
with a short speech illustrating the importance of the sleep lab to
the community. Healthcare professionals and the community had the
opportunity to tour the new facilities and Mayor George Spadoro of
Edison was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. In his speech,
Mayor Spadoro celebrated how the expansion of the Center honors the
dreams of NJNI founder Dr. R. A. Zapulla, who died February 13, 2002.
The expansion of the center was the result of nearly 10 years of strategic planning and just under a year of construction. Expansion efforts included doubling the Centers overnight patient capacity, adding state-of-the-art digital monitoring devices, and included accommodation renovations to rival that of a five-star hotel. While pleasing to the eye, the design improvements are not just about beautiful furniture and room treatments. Theyre primarily about serving a function, comments Kay Rahman, technical and administrative director of the Sleep Center. When the study environment is geared toward patient comfort, we are able to get a greater understanding of a patients nightly experience.
Sleep disorders are a serious concern. It is estimated that 62% of American adults suffer from sleep disorders. Says Rahman, Sleep disorders not only impact ones daily ability to function, but they can impact long-term health and wellness. And as such, early and accurate diagnosis, preventative measures, and diligent treatment are essential to managing these disorders and improving ones quality of life.
Adds Rahman, There are many reasons why one may have a sleep disorder, which is why it is important to have a multi-disciplinary approach for proper evaluation and treatment as it allows the disorder to be reviewed from many different perspectives.
As a multi-disciplinary center, the Sleep Disorder Center provides resources for the evaluation and management of a full range of sleep concerns, from the most common disorders to the most rare. With facilities for both pediatric and adult patients suffering with sleep disorders, the Sleep Center serves patients of all ages.
The staff at the Center includes board certified sleep physicians, board certified neurologists, nurse clinicians, registered polysomnographic technologists, psychologists, and social workers. Pulmonologists, cardiologists, critical care physicians, general surgeons, and ear, nose and throat surgeons are readily available as consultants.
Founded in 1993, the Sleep Disorder Center at NJNI is run under the guidance of internationally renowned sleep medicine expert Arthur S. Walters, M.D. The Center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a professional organization dedicated to assuring the quality of care for patients with sleep disorders, as well as promoting the advancement of sleep research, and providing public and professional education on sleep disorders.
The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is a comprehensive facility designed exclusively for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of complex neurological disorders in adults and children. Services offered at the Institute include programs in spine and brain tumors, dizziness and balance disorders, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, stroke and movement disorders. As a department of Seton Hall University's School of Graduate Medical Education, NJNI serves as the clinical setting for SHU's residency training in neurology.
