New Jersey Neuroscience Institute Hosts Open House
To Celebrate Sleep Disorder Center Expansion

Edison, NJ-On June 17, the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI) of JFK Medical Center will celebrate the recent expansion of the Institute's Sleep Disorder Center. Beginning at noon, both healthcare professionals and the community are invited to tour the facilities.

After years of strategic planning and nearly a year of construction, the Sleep Disorder Center has doubled its capacity from two to four beds. With special beds, furniture, carpet and wallpaper, the rooms are as inviting as any five-star hotel, yet fully equipped for medical study with state-of-the-art digital monitoring devices. Says Kay Rahman, Technical and Administrative Director of the Sleep Center, “The accommodations are geared to aid patient sleep study. The more comfortable the environment...the more comfortable the patient. And when a patient feels at-home, we get a greater understanding of a patient's nightly experience.”

Founded in 1993, the Sleep Lab went into full operation in 1999 when internationally renowned sleep medicine expert Arthur S. Walters, M.D. joined the NJNI staff. With facilities for both pediatric and adult patients suffering with sleep disorders, the Sleep Center serves patients of all ages.

"Sleep disorders can impact one's ability to function during awake times, as well has impact long-term health and wellness," says Rahman. Early and accurate diagnosis, preventative measures, and diligent treatment are essential to managing these disorders.

Adds Rahman, “There are many reasons why one may have a sleep disorder, which is why it is important to have a multi-disciplinary approach for proper evaluation and treatment as it allows the disorder to be reviewed from many different perspectives."

As a multi-disciplinary center, the Sleep Disorder Center provides resources for the evaluation and management of a full range of sleep concerns, from the most common disorders to the most rare. The staff at the Center includes board certified sleep physicians, board certified neurologists, nurse clinicians, registered polysomnographic technologists, psychologists, and social workers. Pulmonologists, cardiologists, critical care physicians, general surgeons, and ear, nose and throat surgeons are readily available as consultants.

The Sleep Disorder Center at the NJNI is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a professional organization dedicated to assuring the quality of care for
patients with sleep disorders, as well as promoting the advancement of sleep research, and providing public and professional education on sleep disorders.
