New Jersey Neuroscience Institute:
Director Named Researcher of the Year

EDISON, NJ—Sleep expert Arthur S. Walters, M.D. , neurologist and co-director of the Sleep Disorders Program at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI) at JFK Medical Center in Edison and Professor of Neuroscience at Seton Hall University School of Graduate Medical Education, was recently named Researcher of the Year by Seton Hall University.

The honor is a new creation by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Grants and Research Services.  The awards recognize faculty across the University for outstanding accomplishments in research.  One recipient from each school or college was selected.  Dr. Walters received a plaque and a stipend of $2,500.

Martin Gizzi, MD, PhD, Chairman and Professor of Neurology at NJNI comments, “Dr. Walters has made extraordinary contributions to research in sleep disorders. He is a nationally known clinician with over 100 publications to his name, including three textbooks. His research grants from the federal government, private foundations and industry total in the millions. Art Walters is the model of a clinical scientist that we all strive for.”

In his 33-year medical career, Dr. Walters has distinguished himself as an expert in sleep medicine. He has received numerous research grants, published extensively on the topic, served on editorial boards, and is recognized worldwide for his expertise. Most recently he was recognized on America's Registry of Outstanding Professionals and as one of the 500 Leaders of Science , 1000 Great Intellectuals , and last year was honored as one of America's Top Physicians .

Dr. Walters received his medical degree from Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit , MI . He interned at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI. He conducted his residency at Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and served as a Movement Disorder Fellow with Dr. Stanley Fahn, Lucien Cote, et al, Neurological Institute, in New York City. Previously he served as a staff neurologist at Brooklyn Jewish and Coney Island Hospitals in, Brooklyn, NY, and Staff Physician in Neurology Service at VA Medical Center in Lyons, NJ . Dr. Walters joined NJNI in 1998.

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center is a comprehensive facility designed exclusively for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of complex neurological disorders in adults and children.  Services offered at the Institute include programs in spine and brain tumors, degenerative spinal disorders, dizziness and balance disorders, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, stroke, and movement disorders.  The neurosurgery division is comprised of 5 fellowship-trained surgeons with expertise in minimally-invasive spinal surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, pain and movement disorder surgery, epilepsy surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and minimally-invasive brain surgery. Edison , NJ —The next meeting of the Central New Jersey Brain Tumor Support Group is slated for Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. , at the Parish Center of St. Luke's Church, 300 Clinton Avenue , North Plainfield , NJ 07060 . The August meeting will be facilitated by Patty Anthony, RN, BSN, CNRN, Sue Stephens, LCSW, ACSW, a counselor at JFK Medical Center , will be talking about coping with illness.

The support group is open to brain tumor patients, as well as their family, friends, and caregivers. The group meets the first Thursday of every month and includes special guest presentations and activities throughout the year.

The Central New Jersey Brain Tumor Support Group has been serving the needs of those affected by brain tumors since 1991. The group is sponsored in part by the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI) located at JFK Medical Center in Edison . Since its beginnings, the support group has seen 115 members pass away from brain tumors.
