Gamma Knife History
Cutting Edge Technology with a Track Record

More than three decades ago, Lars Leksell, M.D., an innovative neurosurgeon at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, set out to develop a non-surgical technique for treating brain conditions, including tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and neurologic disorders. He and his colleagues installed the first Gamma Knife in 1968 and began treating patients, gathering data and perfecting the technology.
The procedure has evolved steadily over the years and today there are more than 1,000 medical publications documenting the success of Gamma Knife radiosurgery. More than 100,000 individuals have received Gamma Knife treatment and there are over 120 Gamma Knife Centers around the world. The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center joins more than 50 of the largest and most prestigious institutions in this country to offer the advanced treatment option.
