Neuromuscular Disorders Program
Are you having numbness and tingling in your feet and hands? Do you have problems with weakness involving your arms or legs? Are there genetic conditions which occur in your family that affect your nerves or muscles? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you may suffer or be at risk of developing a disorder of the nerves or muscles.

Every year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with one of many neuromuscular disorders. These conditions range from common disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and peripheral neuropathy to those which are less common, including motor neuron disease and myasthenia gravis. Many neuromuscular diseases have a genetic basis and may occur in one or more members of a family.

In the Neuromuscular Program of the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center, our team focuses on the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases. Our specialists (including Raji P. Grewal, M.D., an expert in Neuromuscular diseases and Genetics) are skilled in taking the necessary steps to accurately diagnose and effectively treat patients.

The initial evalution of the patient will include a detailed history and neurological examination. In addition, other tests may be required to investigate or to provide confirmation of a suspected diagnosis. These can include specialized blood tests, radiological examinations such as MRI studies, an electromyogram (EMG), or muscle biopsy, nerve biopsy or autonomic testing.

Once a diagnosis is reached, further therapy is offered which can include surgery or specific medications. The management may include physical rehabilitation (coordinated through the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute).
