Neuro-Oncology

Neuro-Oncology is the study of primary and metastatic central nervous system neoplasms, as well as the study of the malignancy (i.e. breast, lung, prostate, colon cancer, etc.). These complications include paraneoplastic syndromes, metastatic disease and complications of therapy (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery).

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center can make a difference in the care and treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors. Our highly trained and experienced team of specialists offers each patient diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spinal cord. We understand our patients' need to be informed and to explore all your options. And, for their convenience, all Neuro-Oncology Services are located at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey.

Tumors
  • Astrocytoma (Low Grade and Anaplastic)
  • Glioblastoma Multiforme
  • Oligodendroglioma (Low Grade and Anaplastic)
  • Oligoastrocytoma
  • Primary CNS Lymphoma
  • Brainstem Glioma
  • Meningioma
  • Craniopharyngioma
  • Germinoma and Non-Germinoma Tumors
  • Pititary Adenomas
  • Metastatic Lesions
About Diagnosis

Diagnosis may be accomplished through:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging, known as MRI, which helps your specialist determine the location and extent of the tumor.
  • MR spectroscopy, which determines the chemical composition of the growth.
  • Functional MRI, which assesses brain function, such as the ability to speak and use language correctly.
  • Stereotactic biopsy, which determines the  tumor type.

Therapies

  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Neurosurgery
  • Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery is an advanced technology which allows brain surgery to be performed with a brief hospital stay, reduced pain, shorter recovery period and no incisions.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery, where targeted radiation is delivered to focal points in the brain, thereby protecting healthy brain tissue. This procedure requires no incision, and can be effective in treating disorders that are inaccessible by conventional neurosurgery.
  • All patients and cases that are candidates for radiosurgery are presented at a Tumor Board. The Tumor Board is made up of specialists who discuss treatment options and plan the best type of therapy.
  • Radiation therapy, offered in conjunction with the JFK Cancer Center.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Interventional radiology, a means of delivering chemotherapy directly to the brain tumor.
