Sleep is an important function of the brain, occupying nearly a third of each day and strongly affecting the remaining (waking) two-thirds of the day. Sleep disturbances can affect both young and old. Impaired sleep can diminish performance at school, work, or even cause difficulties in marriage or social life.
The Sleep Disorder Center at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute has been established to help properly diagnose the causes of sleep problems, which can manifest as too much or too little sleep. Sleep Labs are located at JFK & Muhlenberg campuses.
Sleep Disorders and Symptoms:
A variety of sleep disorders can be treated at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center. Following are some of the disorders our staff can treat and a list of their symptoms:
Sleep Apnea: Breathing stops repeatedly during sleep, may have snoring, snorting or gasping for breath while asleep.
Insomnia: Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Waking earlier than you would like.
Narcolepsy: Unable to stay awake despite a good night's sleep. May have vivid nightmares, experience sudden weakness when emotionally charged and momentary paralysis while falling asleep or waking.
Restless Legs/Nocturnal Myoclonus: Can't keep legs still no matter how hard you try, as well as a crawling sensation of the legs. Legs thrash or move while asleep.
Parasomnias: Sleepwalking, night terrors, severe nightmares, and bed-wetting.
Infant Apnea: Infant stops breathing while sleeping or feeding.
Depending on the nature of the sleep disorder, you may need to undergo a sleep study. A sleep study is a painless recording procedure used to monitor and assess sleep patterns, breathing, heart activity, muscle activity, and snoring during sleep. This test is merely a recording of what you go through every night while asleep.
Sleep disorder patients are seen by a physician Monday through Friday at the JFK Sleep Clinic. Appointments for the sleep clinic at JFK Medical Center can be made by calling (732) 321-7935. If you have any further questions, please call our Main number (732) 321-7010 and choose the prompt for Sleep Studies and you will be connected to our Sleep Staff.
