Pupillometry uses harmless infra-red illumination of the eyes to measure the size of the pupils under different lighting conditions. Measuring the pupil and its reaction to different types of stimuli allow us to gain new insight into the basic anatomy of the visual system. We are moving this knowledge from the laboratory into the clinical realm and using pupillary reactions to diagnose and follow patients with a variety of lesions involving the eye and the central nervous system. Patients with disorders involving the optic nerves, optic chiasm and midbrain in particular have characteristic changes in pupil responses.

Research is currently being done with a grant funded by the Department
of Defense to study the effects of fatigue on pupil function, eye
movements and mental functioning.
