The goal of the vestibular laboratory is to investigate the human balance system and the diseases that affect it. Our interests lie in the areas of vestibular adaptation (how the balance system readjusts itself in response to disease and aging), the effect of medications on the balance system and specifics on how the balance system reacts to rotation and tilt.
Specifically we are concerned with
· How the gain and time constant (Tc) of
the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) are affected by multiple rotations (very
short term adaptation).
· The effect of motion sickness medications
on the balance system and does that effect correlate with the efficacy
of the drug.
· The relationship between the Tc of the VOR and disease states.
· How technique in performing the canal-repositioning maneuver
effects the treatment of BPPV.
